Background of the Study
Grief and loss are inevitable parts of aging, as older adults experience the death of loved ones, loss of social roles, and declining physical health. In Kaduna State, cultural practices and social support systems play a critical role in how elderly individuals cope with grief. Effective coping strategies are essential for mitigating the adverse psychological impacts of loss, which can include depression, anxiety, and social withdrawal (Olawale, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024). Traditional practices, religious rituals, and family support networks often provide the primary means for managing grief. However, the rapid changes in societal structure and urbanization have led to a weakening of these support systems, leaving many older adults vulnerable to prolonged or complicated grief. Understanding the coping mechanisms employed by the elderly in Kaduna State is crucial for developing interventions that support mental resilience and improve quality of life. This study aims to explore the various coping strategies used by older adults in the face of grief and loss, examine their effectiveness, and identify opportunities for enhancing support through community-based and culturally sensitive interventions.
Statement of the Problem
In Kaduna State, many elderly individuals struggle with the emotional burden of grief and loss, yet there is limited understanding of the coping strategies they employ. The traditional support systems that once provided solace and guidance are eroding due to urbanization, migration, and changing family structures (Uche, 2023). Consequently, many older adults experience prolonged grief, which can lead to adverse mental health outcomes such as depression and anxiety. Additionally, the stigma associated with seeking psychological help may prevent individuals from accessing professional support, further exacerbating their emotional distress. The absence of structured, culturally appropriate grief support programs leaves a significant gap in mental health care for the elderly. This study seeks to investigate the coping mechanisms currently used by older adults in Kaduna State, assess their effectiveness, and recommend strategies to enhance coping through improved community support and mental health services.
Objectives of the Study
1. To examine the coping strategies employed by elderly individuals in Kaduna State to manage grief and loss.
2. To evaluate the effectiveness of these strategies in mitigating adverse mental health outcomes.
3. To propose recommendations for enhancing grief support programs for the elderly.
Research Questions
1. What coping strategies do elderly people in Kaduna State use to deal with grief and loss?
2. How effective are these strategies in reducing depression and anxiety?
3. What interventions can strengthen grief support for older adults?
Research Hypotheses
1. Active coping strategies (e.g., participation in support groups) are significantly associated with reduced depressive symptoms.
2. Reliance on traditional and religious practices is positively correlated with improved grief management.
3. Structured community support programs will significantly enhance coping outcomes among the elderly.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on elderly residents in Kaduna State who have experienced significant personal losses. Data will be collected via interviews, focus groups, and validated psychological assessments. Limitations include potential recall bias and cultural sensitivity in discussing grief.
